Survivors and Families Commemorate 50th Anniversary of Malisbong Massacre on September 24
GENERAL SANTOS CITY (September 23, 2024) — On September 24, 2024, survivors and families will gather at the Malisbong Trading Center in Barangay Malisbong, Palimbang, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the tragic Malisbong Massacre, which claimed the lives of hundreds of Moro residents.
The commemoration, themed “From Trauma to Transformation: Healing, Remembering and Moving Forward,” will be hosted by Sultan Kudarat State University and the Barangay Council of Malisbong.
The Malisbong Massacre took place on September 24, 1974, when government troops killed Muslim civilians during a military operation against suspected insurgents in the ongoing conflict in Mindanao. Estimates indicate that hundreds of unarmed individuals, including women and children, were killed.
This event exacerbated existing tensions between the Moro community and the Philippine government, highlighting significant human rights abuses and the struggles for autonomy among the Muslim population.
The brutal killings of Moro civilians during the martial law years under President Ferdinand Marcos sparked outrage among the Bangsamoro people, intensifying their fight for secession.
Over the years, survivors and their families have been actively seeking reparations from the state for the suffering they endured as a result of the massacre. (Gandhi C. Kinjiyo, BMN/BangsamoroToday)
