MENRE-BARMM Hosts 1st Regional Wildlife Committee Meeting to Bolster Conservation Efforts
COTABATO CITY (May 23, 2024) — The Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy (MENRE) has taken a significant step toward wildlife conservation by convening the inaugural meeting of the Regional Wildlife Management Committee. Organized by the Biodiversity Resource Management Division (BRMD) under the Biodiversity, Ecosystems, Research, and Development Services (BERDS), the meeting took place on May 30 at the MENRE Conference Hall in this City.
The formation of the committee aligns with DAO No. 04-55, which streamlines procedural guidelines under the Joint DENR-DA-PCSD Implementing Rules and Regulations Act No. 9147, known as the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. The committee is tasked with safeguarding wildlife resources and regulating the collection and trade of wildlife species.
MENRE said in its social media post, that during the meeting, Nowe Rodriguez from DENR IX presented key topics, including an overview of Section 3 of RA 9147, which covers the scope and application of the act. The discussion also included the Joint DENR-DA-PCSD Administrative Order No. 01, detailing procedural guidelines for wildlife conservation and protection.
Mohammad Ali R. Dimaren, BERDS Director and Chairman of the Regional Wildlife Committee, highlighted the importance of collaboration with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
“We from MENRE-BARMM highly acknowledge and appreciate your participation and inputs for effective and efficient implementation of Section 3 under RA 9147,” said Director Dimaren.
The meeting gathered officials from BERDS, Provincial ENRE Offices (PENREOs), and Community ENRE Offices (CENROs). Attendees included Committee Co-Chairman Chief Nasser Awal, Chief Baharodin Bauolo, Chief Annie Dumamba, PENREO Lauban Abdul, PENREO Marieta Ladjiman, CENREO Faisal Akmad, CENREO Datumama Makartur, Ronnie Hantian, Maria Pilar Tawasil, and Judy Angkad.
The session concluded with a proposal to broaden the committee’s membership to include representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Agrarian Reform (MAFAR), academic institutions, and other stakeholders. This expansion aims to ensure a comprehensive and collaborative approach to wildlife management in the Bangsamoro region.
Meanwhile, MENRE also joined the Department of Energy (DOE) and the Philippine National Oil Company – Exploration Corporation as Philippine delegates to the Australian Energy Producers Conference and Exhibition (APPEA) 2024 started on May 20 until today.
The MENRE said that APPEA is a landmark conference that brings together the upstream energy industry and focuses on the evolving landscape of global energy, technological innovations, and the pressing challenges faced by the industry. (Sahara A. Saban, BMN/BangsamoroToday)
