COTABATO CITY (May 8, 2024) — Sultan sa Barongis Municipality in Maguindanao Del Sur of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) has been lauded for its outstanding performance in disaster risk reduction and management (DRRM) at the prestigious 23rd Gawad Kalasag Awards.

The municipality’s commendable DRRM framework, marked by early warning systems and infrastructure development, has garnered well-deserved recognition. Through prioritizing community engagement and fostering collaboration across various sectors, Sultan sa Barongis has empowered its residents and fortified its resilience against disasters.

This acknowledgment solidifies Sultan sa Barongis’ position as a beacon of resilience, setting an exemplary standard for other Local Government Units (LGUs). Its dedication to disaster preparedness serves as a model for fostering a nationwide culture of resilience, instilling hope amidst adversities.

The Ministry of the Interior and Local Government (MILG) of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) extends its heartfelt congratulations to the Municipality of Sultan sa Barongis for its outstanding achievements.

The 23rd Gawad Kalasag Seal and Special Awards for Excellence in Disaster Risk Reduction and Management and Humanitarian Assistance served as a testament to the municipality’s unwavering commitment to the safety and well-being of its constituents.

Organized by the Office of Civil Defense – National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC), the Gawad Kalasag (KAlamidad at Sakuna LAbanan SAriling Galing ang Kaligtasan) is an esteemed annual ceremony that recognizes exceptional initiatives in promoting and advancing DRRM efforts in the country.

Civil Defense Deputy Administrator, Assistant Secretary Bernardo Rafaelito Alejandro IV said, “We take this moment to bring our attention to the efforts of our hard-working partners who tirelessly work for the safety of the citizens of our nation. We recognize those shining examples who uphold the culture of resilience and excel in the constant struggle against the threats of hazards and disasters.”

Sultan sa Barongis under the Bangsamoro region along with Municipality of Cagwait, Surigao Del Sur; Municipality of Trento, Agusan Del Sur; Municipality of Tubajon, Dinagat Islands; Municipality of Malungon, Sarangani; Maguindanao Del Sur; Province of Pampanga; Province of Antique; Province of Dinagat Islands were recognized by the Civil Defense – National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council.
