Functions of Indigenous Peoples in BARMM Center of Tribal Consultations

COTABATO CITY (April 11, 2025) — In the Bangsamoro region, the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs (MIPA) held a successful Tribal Consultation focused on empowering the Indigenous Council of Leaders in Isabela City on April 8.
The Basilan Provincial Office of MIPA organized a diverse and influential gathering that included Indigenous leaders, respected elders, and key stakeholders from various communities across the province.
This consultation served as an important platform for open dialogue and shared learning, emphasizing the vital role of the Indigenous Peoples (IP) Council.
Maysara Yunus, MIPA’s Provincial Coordinator in Basilan said that in consonance with the BIPA of 2024, there is a special privilege granted to the IP Council of Leaders as provided by law. Specifically, under Section 22, an IP Council shall be established to serve as an advisory and consultative body to MIPA.
“We conducted this consultation to empower IP Council leaders in Basilan, ensuring they understand their roles and responsibilities in the community, as well as their rights and privileges under the law,” said Yunus.
Initiatives like this highlight the Bangsamoro Government’s ongoing commitment—particularly through MIPA—to uphold the rights, dignity, and cultural richness of Indigenous communities.
This effort transcends mere policies or symbolic gestures; it involves genuine, on-the-ground engagement that listens, learns, and acts.
By prioritizing Indigenous voices and safeguarding their heritage, the government ensures that no tribe is overlooked, no tradition is forgotten, and every Indigenous community is empowered to thrive today while preserving their roots for future generations.
