Bangsamoro Government Opens Third Regular Session with Emphasis on Poverty Reduction, Continued Reforms
COTABATO CITY (May 15, 2024) — The Second Bangsamoro Transition Authority Parliament commenced its third regular session on May 14, 2024 with the presence of Chief Minister Ahod “Al Haj Murad” Ebrahim who delivered an inspiring report on the region’s achievements and outlined the legislative priorities moving forward.
Chief Minister Ebrahim highlighted the significant strides made in poverty alleviation, a key focus of the Bangsamoro government’s agenda. He noted the marked decrease in poverty incidence, from 55.9 percent in the first semester of 2018 under the ARMM to 34.8 percent in 2023.
He said the substantial reduction underscores the effectiveness of the government’s comprehensive strategies aimed at uplifting the socio-economic status of the Bangsamoro families.
“We continue to tirelessly fulfill our mandate, implement flagship programs, and institute major reforms and behavioral change. A concrete result of this collaborative effort is reflected in our score in terms of poverty reduction,” said Ebrahim.
“First-semester poverty incidence in the region was 55.9 percent in 2018, during the then-ARMM. In 2021, this dropped to 39.4 percent, making BARMM the region with the most significant reduction in poverty incidence among families. In 2023, we were able to sustain this momentum with a reported 34.8 percent, a 5 percent reduction from the previous period,” he added.
Ebrahim also reflected on the resilience and guarded optimism that have been hallmarks of the Bangsamoro people’s journey toward peace and development.
He acknowledged the challenging decisions and setbacks faced along the way, but emphasized the unwavering commitment to peacebuilding and progress. Citing a verse from the Qur’an, Ebrahim reiterated the belief that despite the obstacles, the strategic planning and perseverance will lead to successful outcomes.
The session’s opening was also marked by the official declaration from the new Wali of the Bangsamoro, Shiekh Muslim M. Guimaden, further underscoring the continuity and stability of the Bangsamoro governance. (Hasna U. Bacol, BMN/ Bangsamoro Today)
