COTABATO CITY (April 16, 2025) — More than 300 solar-powered streetlights are being installed in shelters for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Marawi City and Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur. This initiative stems from a collaboration between the Bangsamoro Government’s Marawi Rehabilitation Program (MRP) and the Ministry of Human Settlements and Development (MHSD).

Launched in February 2025, the project aims to improve safety and living conditions in IDP shelters. The number of lights installed at each site varies based on its size, with areas like Kilala and Gadongan receiving between 25 to 50 lights.

As a result of this initiative, there has been a noticeable reduction in accidents and crime. The brighter environment fosters a greater sense of community and encourages more social interactions among residents during the evening.

The project is part of the Bangsamoro government’s 12-Point Priority Agenda and is currently 36.07% complete, with five out of the twelve targeted shelters already equipped with solar lighting.

Engr. Abdulhanif A. Ondi, from the MRP Project Management Office (PMO), reaffirmed the team’s commitment to the ongoing rehabilitation efforts. “We are fully dedicated to accelerating the implementation of our projects with the utmost efficiency, ensuring that all efforts align with the required specifications and are guided by the principles of Moral Governance under the leadership of the Office of the Chief Minister,” he said.
